  Leave Your Car at Home

Did you know...

  • Americans spend approximately 20 percent of their annual income on transportation?
  • Vehicle emissions rank as the primary source of pollution in San Luis Obispo County?
Consider the cost to drive to work. Add the cost of gasoline and parking, then consider indirect costs, including vehicle maintenance, depreciation, car insurance and possible financing expenses. Find out your true cost of driving with the Commuter Calculator.

It's So Easy:

1. Get a free ride: Anyone who works in SLO's downtown core can ride SLO Transit buses free with a Gold Pass. Just take a photo ID and current pay stub to 919 or 990 Palm St. See a map of routes or call 805-781-7531 for more information.

2. "Does this bus stop...?": Regional and local buses serve the entire county and beyond, providing daily transportation to areas from San Miguel and San Simeon to Santa Maria. Check out the flexible schedules and other information.

3. Share a ride: Encourage employees to carpool with incentives, such as preferential parking at work. It's a cost-effective way to show commitment to reducing car trips.

4. Van pool: A reliable and relaxing commute, Ride-On van pools typically cost about $80 monthly. Those fees include everything from gas to insurance to getting the van washed. Pre-tax savings are available to eligible employers (www.commuterchoice.com.) Register for a van pool at TripLink.

5. Pedal power: Sixty percent of trips are less than two miles. Bike riding is a great choice for commuting or to run most errands. Usually you'll get a prime parking spot — for free! Register to find a Bike Buddy and become eligible for monthly drawings. Employers can improve bike parking by contacting the SLO County Bicycle Coalition.

6. Walk the walk: It's healthy, it's cheap and, in San Luis Obispo County, it's something you can do almost year-round. Consider taking the bus and getting off a couple of bus stops before your destination. Find out our community's Walk Score!

7. Work from home: It not only reduces traffic congestion, it also reduces office space needs provides an opportunity to cross-train employees. Most successful telework programs include formal policies, which discuss equipment and employee outcome measurements.

8. Shuttles: Door-to-door shuttles are a great option, especially if bus service isn't available. Numerous shuttles help get employees to the airport, a lunch meeting or another destination.

9. Yo, taxi!: There are three taxi companies in the San Luis Obispo region.

10. Ride the rails: Three stops in San Luis Obispo County make it convenient to use the train for business trips either north or south. Amtrak provides free transfers on any RTA or SLO Transit bus. Show the conductor your ticket for a transfer. In San Luis Obispo, two buses provide easy connections to locations in the city.

"Using the Ride-On vanpool is more cost effective than driving a car to work. Plus, it's a lot more fun. My co-riders and I have formed friendships, and there's a great sense of camaraderie
on the van."- Mark Langowski, driver of vanpool # 11
